The Killers’ album, Hot Fuss, is superbly conflicting. The lyrical trap set by front man Brandon Flowers ensnares your urge to rock. He disturbs that balance we’re all supposed to maintain between mind and body, both intentionally and well. For instance, in All These Things I’ve Done the energy of the music is rippin’, but the lyrics speak to our need for help, the fear of being forgotten, and an overall pessimistic POV that creates this battle between your mind and body – should I celebrate or lament?
This holds true throughout the entire record: Smile Like You Mean It, Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, Somebody Told Me, and in Everything Will Be Alright, well, you won’t feel very optimistic about everything turning out peachy. The album’s best song? Perhaps, Andy, You’re a Star. It’s dark and inviting. Warning: Don’t sit around alone in a dark, empty room with this track on repeat!
This "glass-half-what?" album is perfect for those moments when you have that healthy amount of disdain for life's pains. You’ll be feeling good about feeling bad.
